wishing every one a very happy new year.. as I said in my article on the tsunami tragedy(its on my website and appearing in various publications on 1st) it brings home the fact that life is short and unpredictable, home even more intensely..so here's wishing you all a life full of happiness and everything good...live it to the fullest in the present moment and live it well

This tragedy is beyond imagination. The devastation so vast, so furious, so sudden , so painful and without warning. I just can not believe my own eyes! I see these images in news coverage across the region and yet, it seems like something Hollywood dreamed up and not real. The faces of mothers crying for their children and the bewildered looks on children's faces - not fully understanding what has happened. Truly gut wrenching images! I pray for them all.

I'm trying to make contact with Tamil Nadu's chapter of the Rotary Club to see if we can send donations directly where needed. I have a lead but communications are real bad. I have posted links on this site to other agencies where everyone can donate. Please help!

I know we have many ISK-ites in that area and I'm anxiously awaiting word that they are fine. If one of you makes contact, please let us all know here. God Bless.

Many of you had written that you are visiting India around December. I do recollect Deepak, Poonam, Kavita, Anshu. Well if are going to be in Delhi sometime while you're here, why not confirm your dates and we fix up something. In case we have time we can rope in a few guys from other places too, if possible.
C'mon lets hear your plans!! Write to me on my mail and i'll see to it that we do something about it.
Looking forward to meeting you all soon.

Hi everyone....ISKite's.

Hope you all had a Blast on Diwali & Eid (As applicable). I have to admit Manoj when you called I was in deep sleep as was 0525 hrs and could hardly beleive my Luck. Please give me your mobile no with code's so I can send SMS as well.

Hello Shashi
Sorry for the keyboard malfunction.Indeed,it was a very 'unsporting' freudian slip.A thousand apologies to Sandeep. As you are aware, I am presently in Delhi. Before that I was in idyllic surroundings of Himachal (some parts of it remind a lot about Kabul).Dear Rajeev, indeed,I played the leading role in the Hindi play'Parda Uthane Se Pehle' in 1976.So you were there too!(Great to know the 'family' is getting reunited!)Incidently,Sunil Lal also played a cameo in that play.Where is he?Where is Sanjeev Saxena? Regards all.

Are you in Mumbai at the DAKC?

Deepavali was great in Bangalore. >We were all off from work for five days at a stretch - Thursday to Monday (both days included) and boy what it tough on Tuesday morning. I had to leave the cool climate of Bangalore and reach the freezing cold of Turin for a few lectures. Am in Italy (Turin and Milan) till Sunday morning. Lovely place and great scenery. Enjoyed my morning jog in the biting cold!!!!

Hi everyone!
Diwali was hectic. 10 days of partying clubbed with impossible deadlines at work since all support units were going off for 4 days. Diwali however was good and safe. Delhi was covered with smog for two days. You couldn't see the building across. But brightly lit houses and the constant noise of exploding crackers went on till the wee hours of the morning.
We lit diyas at home then went to mom dad's place. Did the lighting there as well, then went down to burn crackers, then took them for a drive to see lighting all over our part of Delhi. We then had dinner, played Teen Patti and crawled back home exhausted. Thankfully the next day was off...but evening parties went on till Sunday. It happens only in India...

Hello Everyone,
The site seems to rolling!I was a transitory member of this exclusive club-for a year only(1976-77 10th class). The memories, though are sharp and they have refused to fade away.I can put a face to many of the names I see on the site.In fact,I have been briefly in touch with Manoj(Talwar) and Vijay Suri through another site batchmates.com in the last two years.Have talked to Ravi Shastri as well since this site. But the lottery definitely has been the meeting with Ajay Prasad(the man for all the seasons and for all the reasons)just before I was leaving for Arunachal Pradesh for a month in late Sept. With so many of us around in Delhi and neighbourhood, things can only get better and Kabul can be revisited! Talking of Kabul, the place(ISK) sure brought out something extra in all of us.It has been the only place where I have won 2 athletics gold medals!!And hello there,Shashi Balagopal!Your photograph does you justice!Recognizable everytime!I remember our 10th class(very small). The girls used to sit in the front row,I in the second.Did Shashi have a sense of humour? After a period was over, she'd turn back and deadpan some great quotable quote! And heavens help someone if he was at the wrong end of her joke! Shashi,I hope you have still preserved that great sense of timing and humour.Mr.S.C.Arora has been a great teacher, evoking awe, respect and fear at the same time(not an easy task).Hope to go to see him with Ajay Prasad one of these days.HAPPY DIWALI all!

Hi all,

Diwali has defintely started in the full swing here in the bay area too. Am quite impressed with the kind of shows the local Indian community is putting together. Yesterday we had a show by Sukhwinder, Jaspal Narula, Annu Kapur and Richa Sharma - these are not those huge auditorium shows, but homely community center events. The first round of "teen patti" begins today -
so looking forward to it.

Do ping me is anyone of you visits SFO area anytime.

Wishing a very Happy Diwali to all of you from the Angals.

Am equipped to welcome any of you guys should you be in Delhi ever...or even transiting. Do keep in touch.
Hey Webmaster I need the copy of that album. I have Carpenters etc. but Bawdy songs ... need it.

Ajay Prasad
- Friday, November 05, 2004 at 09:42:40 (EST)
The album was bawdy songs and backroom ballads and it was emblematic of the time altho no hips at all couldnt hold a candle (!) to the chandlers wife song. I would add crocodile rock as my pick for the ISK anthem. Ajay, I did go to the US in '83 to business school and joined wall street in '85. Moved to London in '95 which is where we live now..where are you? Shashi I did have the dubious distinction of living down the road from Deepak, guilty as charged.

"well, she remembers, the night that she wed,
she lifted up the covers, and crawled into bed,
she reached for his shoulders, (his shoulders seemed small),
she reached for his hips, (he had no hips at all)".

Chorus: No hips at all...No hips at all...
She married a man with No hips at all !!!

LOL...pictures from Kabul are not the only things I kept. If you ever get nostalgic for the "music" of the times...write me a note and I'll MP3 it for you. It's funny, how this and other songs (Sugar! honey...honey) especially remind me of great times.
Reminds me of The carpenter's.... It's Yesterday Once More!

Hi !
Welcome to this site. Do let us know where you are, about your family, what are you doing, etc. etc. All our e-mail IDs are on the Directory page which you can access through a code provided by Manoj. We'd be glad to hear from you. Last, probably, we met was perhaps years ago at Deepak Narula's place in Delhi at Azad Apartments before you guys proceeded to the US.
As you can see a lot of us are now on this site and its great knowing who where and doing what with himself.
Kabul i know you would not have forgotten ... remember the bawdy songs record which had songs like "no hips at all"? Who had this...you perhaps or Deepak. Do write and share with us some more things you may remember.

Manoj

Thought I would add another misty eyed reunion tale to your catalogue. I had lost the thread with Suhail in '77 and had tried unavailingly to get information on where he was. Kavita mentioned your website a couple of weeks ago and yesterday, after scrolling through a couple of pages of happy nostalgia, I found his email add. As it turns out we had lived in the same city for 10 years, oblivious to each other. You have clearly put serious effort into the site and must feel terrific about the response.
Thanks

Happy birthday, Vijay! We were in the same class, weren't we?

I've just been to see a photo exhibition here at the UN in Geneva on Afghanistan. The photographer is an Afghan who left as a child and has been living in Switzerland. It's called Afghanistan: The Return and is a travelling exhibition, which is coming--or already is--in the US. If you get a chance, you must see it. It's very good. There is a website with 6 of the pictures (http://zalmai.com/Afghanistan-1.html) and if you click on the link for more information, you can find where it's going to be.

Deepak--good to hear from you. It's been so long.

Ajmal, I don't think we were together in school, but I see you're also in Geneva. Let's try and meet up. I'm in the main Palais.

Sorry for not writing all this while. I've been busy on a shooting trip for the Rajasthan Pavilion during the Trade Fair this year. Arrived yesterday night and leaving again tomorrow for a few days.
Welcome dear Roshna, Deepak and Ajmal! Will be sending mails to you soon. Keep this interaction going...don't let go.
Our first re-union (supposedly tonight)is having to get shifted because of several kinds of medical crisis with Kaveryh & Sangeeta and my having to go again etc. Hope we can get together soon. "Insha Allah" will write about it as it happens. Lucky Manoj Srivastav...he'll be able to join now.
Kavita, why isn't Kalyani writing in? Do let her give her address / mail ID as I am likely to make a trip to Jammu soon. I'd like to look her up if she is around.

Ok you guys, here's what I've decided:
The email addresses will no longer be displayed by default. I've added a link on the directory page (top right), if you want to see email id's. This link is for a password secured page and you can only view it if you provide a userid/password. I will be emailing this info to everyone shortly.

Alternatively, as Kavita has suggested, you can always send me an email if you want someone's email and I'll email it you :)

Sheeesh! I did'nt think this was so complicated!!

i dont think we have so many iskites to make this so complicated. manoj why dont you just put everyone's email Id together and email that page out to all of us in one shot..any additions can be forwarded.. as it is I have emailed you to ask about the email addresses of friends I wanted to get in touch with and phone numbers..the guest book is a cool forum for every one to interact and wanting two or three email addreses, is something you took care of. like I wanted to get in touch with suroor hyder, suhail, and bina and i got the info I needed.

Dear Manoj
Pls drop my email id from the directory. Thanks. Boith these ids are very critical for my professional work.

Tariq
- Friday, October 08, 2004 at 01:00:44 (EDT)
Actually password protected page is fairly easy and infact it's already in place. I just need everyone's input on this so I can deploy it if need be.
I think I will simply leave it the way it is right now and wait for everyone's input on this. Some of you have already emailed me expressing concern. If you guys do not want your emails to show, just email me and I'll blank it out. I'm sure you guys have spam blockers in place but they are not really too effective unless you have an exclusive id set.

Let's not make this such a big deal. I'll stay with what I have right now.
Maybe, I'll do a live test to see what you guys prefer.
Cheers!

Manoj

Putting up clear emails will definitely attract spammer bots.
Passwd protection would be nice - but it'd be a lot of work.
At the minimum, suggest obfuscating the emailid strings.
A google search on "Obfuscate email" shows several techniques.
For now it would probably be simplest to do some thing like :
r a j e e va n g a lYahoocom.

Another suggestion is to move to community hosting sites like Orkut or Yahoo groups or Desihub - some ad exposure depending on the site, but you get all features such as moderation, pictures, security, collaboration services for free.

Manoj and others,
There is no question putting detailed information on each one of us on the net.

What I was talking about was a picture with a profile and contact details of each, designed in the form of a booklet. This can then be circulated as hard copies by snail-mail to all of us. I can put such booklet together if I get the data (pics and info).

Tariq - I think you and I are on the same wavelength...I have already put together a complete directory along with email addresses but wasn't sure if I should put any security around it (like a password) OR just publish it for the world to see. As I have posted earlier on this site, a lot of spammers scan through these type of sites and harvest email addresses. We want to do our part and keep our identities out of the hands of spammers.
How does everyone feel about this?
I don't have a problem posting it if most of you don't mind...

We need to make a list of all these guys on the site with email addresses. I have made a list from the guest book. I am sure you have more with you. Can we put the two together and make a directory (not to be pasted on teh site but circulated by snail mail to all iskites). I you are streched I offer to make and design this directory.

Hi everyone!

Wow, Manoj - hats off to you for putting together such a wonderfult site.
And thankyou Shashi for sending me this link. I have been poring over it the past hour and the nostalgia has indeed been overhwhelming.
For those who dont remember me, I am the skinny guy on the 5th row in the Ganga house parade pic - no, just kidding, but I am definitely someplace in there :-).

I was back in Kabul in 1987 - it was so sad to see the ruin. Mr. Verky was still in ISK teaching PE, was great meeting him, Mrs Verky was teaching in a school in Madras. The old charm of the city had vanished.

As for me, after Kabul, it was PHSS Ahmedabad, DPS RKPuram, IIT Delhi, a few years in Delhi and finally here in San Jose since 1991. 2 kids 10 and 8.

I see a lot of familiar names here - Kavery Subbaiah is that you ?
Folks I would love to get in touch with each of you. My email id is :
r a j e e v _ a n g a l @ yahoo.com.
[No spaces in between - have had too much spam coming my way these days].

Have so much catching up to do with each of you guys!
Will be back shortly.

Best Regards,
-rajeev

Hi Manoj and all who are on this site:

This site has too much nostalgia – all the names, the photographs, the memories, all taking one back 25+ years – great job Manoj, making it happen – ‘Thashakoor’!

AjayVijay and Mini, Roshna and Bina, Prithi and Ranjan, Sanjiv Sud, Suhail, Sandeep Shastri, Poonam (Sahni), Vandana (Sharma), Ajmal, Gurbachan, Sunil Malhotra, Manoj Malik, Manoj, Sandeep and Vibha, Kavery and Vivek, Haider, Khalid, Tariq, Shahid and Shahista, Kalyani and Kavita, Fahmi, Suroor, …….. A big hi to all of you and to any one else I might have missed!

And to all the great teachers - KK, P Sharma, Deshprabhu, Bina, Mr. Arora (‘very beautiful! - spells the same either way!’),Bharadwajs, Jasons, Varkis and so many others. School and college after ISK turned out to be a breeze for me and I thank the five years of a top notch education in a small setting. To KK goes the credit for creating the desire to read great authors and not just Alistair MacLean! Mr. Arora for all his strictness is probably the best Math teacher I learnt from (and I continued to study Math for 10 more years after Kabul), Physics and Chemistry were made easier and fun thanks to P.Sharma and Mr. Bhardawaj and to all the projects for the exhibitions and who could have made us do P.T. any better than Mr. Varki – that voice still echoes in my ears - all the various individuals would be chastised for ‘marching like a giraffe!’, the scout clap, hai chak hai chak jumbba jee,.…..

Let me tell you all about my last 25 years – left Kabul in 79 – went to Delhi and completed 12th – joined IIT Kanpur in 1980 (I had no desire to be an engineer but thanks to all the Math, Physics and Chemistry learnt at ISK, got in and was convinced by all to not ‘waste’ the opportunity) – studied Electrical Engg, but on completion, enrolled in a Ph.D, program in Business at Columbia University, New York in 85 - finished my Ph.D. in 89 – joined Wall Street (Lehman Brothers) and stayed there till 2000 (trading bonds) – set up my own (hedge) fund in 2001 and now its three years old - Metacapital Management. Got married in 87 - two kids (10 and 8) and have lived in NYC since 85. Go to India (Delhi for sure, but other places too) regularly - parents and Jyoti (wife, 2 kids 7 and 4) live in Delhi. Poonam and family (2 boys, 12 and 9) have been living in Dubai for many years.

It is amazing that in the last 25 years have hooked up with so few of you – got to change that! Would love to connect with any and all – if visiting New York please contact me. My email address is: dnarula@aol.com. Please write with more info.

More later.

Dear Manoj,

First let me congratulate you for this fabulous initiative and it is very overwhelming to see old friends and just go back in time. After seeing the pictures and reading the names, flashback of memories of good old days rushed and could remember all the good friends and fantastic times we had. Since leavening Kabul in 1980, I went to India and from there to UK, NY and then to Geneva where I live now. I work with the United Nations and presently I am Senior Legal Adviser (United Nations HCR, dealing mostly with Middle Eastern issues). I read the names of many classmates and other friends, and would very much well comes get get in touch with all my old friends you, Ajal, Vijay, Vandana, Roshna, , Khalid, Suhail, Fehmi…. World is so small. One day Jaidev Rande saw my interview on BBC and then sends a message to UN and from there we got in touch few days ago Soumitra Ranade younger brother sends me a message with the address of this site. It’s great and hope we can get in contact with more of our friends and refresh our memories with memorable reminiscences. Many thanks and please keep in touch.

Lots of love and a big hug to all,

I really enjoyed looking at the mystery page and doing my quiz. The women are no mystery at all and havent changed much.I suppose boys changing into men is a more dramatic event.I dont see a lot of people I had hoped to see on the page but wont elaborate at this stage as that will be giving it away.Mini,it was just great to hear from you and I hope you see this on your weekly visit to this site! Thinking back to those days when we were neighbours, and you guys Ajay-Vijay (said in the same breath) still gives me a stitch in the sides from the memory of all that shared laughter! You were all such fun company. Also loved the photos from Ajay's album of Mini,Shashi,Kavery and everyone else. And Mrs G's visit, who could forget that momentous event! I remember standing next to Mrs G at the national anthem stage of the school event along with Mini. Being a bit overcome by her presence,I must have sung a rather weak and watered down version of the anthem which I didnt think would be noticed in the general singalong. But as soon as we finished,Mrs G turned to me briskly and said with a disapproving little pat on my shoulder " the national anthem should be sung with more Josh!"
Apart from the jokes, all the time we spent practising songs for endless events:going to Deshpande's place which Ajay mentioned is something I remember so clearly.Look forward to seeing you all sometime soon.

Yari !
It's time you stop playing pricy. Case is closed. Manij and i have already exchanged notes on this issue with the firm option from my side of letting it remain a secret. Zyada Bhao Khane Ka Nahin....Kya!!!
To our Baaki Ke Yaar !
Hey guys i finally spoke to Manoj K. Shrivastav on 29.09.2004 and he treated me for lunch yesterday. Spent a good two hours together and remembered old times, and names, and who's where, and who is now in....He's a busy man (IAS of the 1988 batch of Himachal Cadre, now Director, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of India) and is out for another 12 days on Election duty in Arunachal Pradesh. Will return on 12th October and wishes to meet anyone and everyone. He also volunteered to fix up the venue for the proposed reunion and we both loved the place...very central and very personal...all subject to the fact that the reunion can take place in New Delhi. (Very sweet of him to have offered).
Sandeep Shastri and we were thinking of having the Grand RE-Union in the year 2007 as we would complete 30 years of being apart from one another. Till then all can plan their inevitable trips back home at the same time.
Sangeeta (Agarwal) Gupta is touching Delhi next weekend... any one else in town? Do get in touch as we are planning a get together here.
Believe me meeting all of you...as it progresses...is a dream and i am sure a very effective healer to my system. How do you feel?
Lots of Love!!

There is still a question mark on the list of your class mates on the LINKS page in front of Anuradha. I think the name was Anuradha Kamra. If yes kindly correct to complete your narration

Oh Tariq, I did not mean the Prasad brothers, I was referring to Vijay Suri who should definitely have been on the site and his silence is intriguing. So I assumeed he must be Yari

Ajay Parsad, Sandeep,
Shoma Yari na fahmidi. Yari yak chiz khob hast. You can keep trying and some day you will know who Yari is. By the way Sandeep, you are way off the mark. It is not one of the Prasad brothers. As much as I know, if one of the Prasad brothers had a finger in some pie the other was there by default. The heavenly twins were together - always. Which is why either one of them cannot be Yari. Yari is this one single guy you wouldn't miss.

Yes Bina, your description of Mr Arora's style was exact. he had the capacity to make his point made very effectively especially if and when it involved pulling up someone but then there was a very gentle side to him too which one had a glimpse of once in away. Being in the teaching/learning line myself, I realise how difficult it is to make that quick swtich.

I also vividly remember the language classes - both English and Hindi. The efforts of Mrs Leela Jason, to develop in the us the right language skills and an interest in the language and of course the prim and proper Mrs Kusum Bharadwaj. I think she took special care to cater to the needs of us non-Hindiwallah's. Of course I will also remember her biting sarcasm in the class. Mr Rohit was a delight when it cames to Civics and Economics and I think if I went on to chose those subjects he has a great hand in that. Those were fun days. Those were memorable days and of course a wonderful place to be in

hi everyone!!,
i was reading of all the scraps u got into with mr arora!! i too was no exception!!remember the morning homily we staff had to deliver to u guys at assembly?some of the staff read out some incomprehensible passages from some book on moral guidance--which im sure just went straight over ur heads as it did over mine ---others held out at length on how to be gud!!-others prepared a small and well thot out speech ----ahem!!! i was one of them!!
do u remember the one in which i actually had a big stone in my hand ? i was using it as an illustration in my talk about --u guessed it --people in glass houses cant afford to throw stones!!.when i think of it now i feel a little funny ---just imagine me in front of the whole lot of u with a big patthar in my hand!!! im sure u must have have wondered whose head was going to get bashed.!!!anyway -- to come bak to mr arora--i had completely forgotten that it was my turn--and was busy inside the school trying to bandage some child who had hurt himself.mr arora had called my name and -i was missing .someone hastily substituted for me ,and promptly at the beginning of the first hour of class, there was a summons.gawd!!! his voice was like a whiplash and he had the coldest expression in his eyes. miss anandadoss---he said--u made me cut a sorry figure in front of everyone!!!i culd have just sunk through the floor .i was so mortified!! after profusely apologising to him i slunk back to the staff room ,resolving to never face the force of his ire again!! he was a strict disciplinarian wasnt he?but he could also be very ,very nice and understanding.i remember i got into a panga with mr bharadwaj, and mr arora was most understanding!!!
i really wish tisca wuld log on sometime.wuld be fun to talk to her wudnt it? byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bina

yeah I remember those potha writing days Mini-now Iam an email junkie. I should be in India in summer. was planning to come in november but a book Iam working on has to be done by december. kabul was a fun time, and seeing the pashto interaction here reminded me of an anecdote that happened in the 80s, mom came here and went to a place called jackson heights the shopping mecca for Indians, in Ny. There she saw this watch at an Iranian man's store and her friend and she typical of their Indian heritage started haggling with the guy-he wanted 50 bucks they wanted to pay 15! finally he told his wife in persian-these women are Indian, they are just like us they will just look and haggle and not buy. Mom retorted right back in persian-if you give us the price we want we will buy it-dont know if the guy was overwhelmed by mom's persian prowess or just exhausted, he was like-oh my god you speak my language, you are my sister, and gave her the watch for 15-then ofcourse mom and her friend went muttering-maybe we paid too much..! minnie just go to my website kavitachhibber.com-all the updates are there and ask tariq to forward my pictures..I sent him some of mine and my brood! after he is done chasing elephants that is!

hi every one,
suroor and bina thank you so much for your emails. I will be writing soon-this week is crazy with some deadlines and then I am leaving for michigan on wednesday..but will write soon to you both..
suhail, a lot of people had a major problem with shahrukh serving liqor on stage to a guy here in atlanta- he was also exceedingly rude to some fans in michigan and misbehaved with a lady here. I guess being a journalist I get to see the nicer side of these stars..some of them are singularly humble and you can sense that goodness, the others are fakely sweet, or maybe as one star told me I intimidate people and have done such a thorough research on them they can't even bs-plus I dont seem like the typical journalist-dont know what that means-do the others grovel in sycophantic stupor-dont know. I remember yelling at kapil dev the first time I met him because he was 15 minutes late for an interview and I was this bratty 18 year old-anshuman was with me-poor kapil god bless his heart apologised and as punishment did his interview the next morning still half asleep in his lungi insisting on speaking in english that even he couldnt understand-he has come a long way!
It is nice to see your email suhail. I still have your meticulously written letters, and great to see you followed your dream to be a doc.
Khalid, you were such a walking anti girl squad, poor prithi probably washed her hands off you early on. I guess I was the one up to the challenge and messed up your face regularly on behalf of the female race!

every one seems to be doing such interesting things. it would be great to hear of your journey, the roads not taken, the quirks of fate that often chnange things suddenly to take you to where you are today. pleae email me and update me-I may end up with a story on that who knows!
Mini you wrote the funniest letters-I still have some of those-all those tongue in cheek comments, even after I was back home in India...I met sharad a long time ago just before I came here, and as usual I was jabbering nineteen to a dozen and he sat there listening and said- you are just the same..you havent changed..I think he used to have his snack, then tea then do his homework and come back to the phone and I would be merrily chatting at break neck speed telling him the agenda since he was my deputy in one session..until I found out he had travelled house and back only to say okay at the end-after that every 5 minute I would say-what was the 4th line of the second para I told you..so he couldnt escape for that snack session!
Mr bhardwaj and his "beshobout it"(be sure about it)still rings in my ears. and hyder the book worm who had intense reactions to everything-I thought he would end up a poet-instead he is a software biggie-sandeep is exactly where I expected him-in bangalore, a political scientist-sandeep sorry havent written-will do so soon!
kavery tell your mom I remember her amazing dosas still..
hyder still waiting for the pictures..
take care

Suroor, you're back from your vacation!you owe me a reply by the way.I do remember that it was you,Suhail, who quoted that bit about the fly on the chariot wheel. Please convey my regards to your parents.I have been meaning to ask about Charanjit Singh for sometime actually.Remember Aberdeen Angus? Mini, where have you disappeared to? Come on get your two fingers out and start typing.Tariq,to answer your earlier question,Ranjan is in Vermont right now.He did a dual Masters in Architecture at MIT and has been working in Boston for years.Would like to say hello to Hyder,Khalid,Shahid and shaista and my regards to your parents- I remember what a wonderful cook your mother is! Manoj,I so clearly recall that basketball incident of yours.I dont remember your fellow offender though! And does anyone remember JN Sharma who arrived in the cold winter of Kabul and always told us mournfully, his mouth full of paan, about how cold and miserable it was at the Maar Maar Hotel where he stayed and where there were all manner of goings on in the room above his and how he couldnt sleep a wink etc.He claimed sadly that even his watch had stopped because of the cold.I remember everything he told us except what he taught us.Poor man.I doubt his memories of Kabul were anywhere near as pleasant as ours.Shashi,do you remember the occasion relating to that photograph of Mini,me,Sandeep,Sharad,Suhail and you?

Running between patients, medical intensive care units, performing bronchoscopies and wasting time with unproductive administrative responsibilities, it is nice to be able to go to the office occasionally and view the web site of India School Kabul, which has really blossomed. I am afraid I am not contributing as much to the growth and expansion of this web site as I would like to.
Suroor, I was sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I have some pleasant recollections of my interactions with him. How is your mother? Please convey our regards to her. My parents send their love to you.
Sandeep, you do look very much like your father. Happy to hear about you. We spent many an hour trying to get the edge over each other in the prime minister versus opposition leader debates. I do not know whether you made this remark or I did, and although it made one of us change colors then, it certainly sounds humorous now, "My esteemed friend reminds me of the fly that sat on the charriot wheel and said-"What a dust I raise."
Mini, I remember how you and Prithi had started taking French classes. You were reading an excerpt from, "The tale of two cities." There was a French character-Evermonde. You pronounced it correctly (with your French accent)and yet the class (including me) burst out laughing..."Where ignorance is bliss....
I remember how Sharad Agarwal and I were desperate to get frogs for our biology dissection. The climate in Kabul was not too conductive to the health of frogs. Eventually we got ten bull frogs imported from Jalalabad. They infested our bathtub for several days, much to the disgust of the family. i still messed up my dissection in the 11th grade exam.
Charanjit Singh took humor to sublime heights. Does anyone know where he is?
Nutan had copied the math schedule and put "ditto" marks in a way that was misinterpreted by several of us. Mr. Arora asked six of us to slap each other on the face for not getting his math books the next day-a mortifying experience that still makes my ears singe. The following day, six angry parents sent letters of objection to him.
I was happy to hear from Dhanmanjiri. She and several others have done so extremely well for themselves. Her knowledge in math was inspirational.
Vivek, you appear to be sailing the seven seas. We spent many a happy hour riding horses on the hills of Wazeer Akbar Khan.
Mr. Bhardwaj's son-Parag, is a medicl resident. He got married three or four years ago in the USA. I met him when he came to NY to interview at our hospital.
Kavita-we saw the Shahrukh Khan show yesterday at Nassau Coliseum. I would guess there were 20,000 people. It was entertaining. Can someone tell Shahrukh Khan that he should stop smoking on the stage. Thousands of children look up to him as a role model and want to emulate him and what he does. Smoking should not be one of them.
Best wishes.

I have not yet activated the mystery page. I'm still waiting for more recent pictures of everyone. I have some but not enough to fill the page. Once I have enough pictures you will be able to see everyone.

Suroor - I need a recent picture from you too.

Bina - No, I'm sorry but I'm not Yari. But Yari has always been a great friend, and I may be the only one that knows the name Yari, but you all know this person. This person has also written to this guestbook with their real name. I'll let it go a bit longer.

Tariq - I'm surprised you don't remember Yari. I met Yari first time at the Indian Embassy in Kabul when you were a little boy and as I recall, Shahid also knew this person. Maybe you and Khalid should ask Shahid to sign in and enlighten everyone.

Hi guys,
This is incredible. I was away for a couple of weeks, and when I looked at the site next, there were so many emails! Manoj, you've really started something. And you do look very dashing in the photo. What I remember about you is your cheeky grin! I can't see the pics in the mystery page either. Could you fix that or tell those of us who can't see the pics how we can access them? Are the mystery pics from the school days or new ones?

Hi Kavita, Mini, Ajay, Vijay, Poonam (Narula), Suhail, Tariq, Hyder. (I know I've left out so many others.) It's so good to get in touch again. Mini--so it was an Italian restaurant! All I remember is the look on your face when you realised what had happened! And I do remember Dubey walking into the glass doors. Hyder, I remember you lending me a bag of books to read. Do you still read a lot? It's actually quite hard to imagine everyone grown-up and responsible!! Suhail, how are your parents? I don't remember being hauled up in front of Arora, but do remember being told off by Joseph for using a cassette player in class. I had snuck mine in to class to record someone's lesson--can't remember who it was, and it wasn't for academic purposes!! I, of course, denied everything. Anyway, the recording didn't really work very well, since the player and the microphone was in my desk.

Does anyone know where Arun Dhawan and his sister Asha are? My father-in-law met Asha and her mother briefly in Delhi many years ago, but I've lost touch.

How are your sisters, Roshana and Shobhana. I remember having played tennis with your dad at the embassy. Dear Bina
Yes you never taught us. Yes I am the one with spiky hair. I was there in 1999 and remember the event. A lady from WWF had also gone with these children to Hawaii. One of those was your daughter – ghosh – some intelligent kid you have. I am sure you saw me in the last function with SP Godrej. If I remember, these kids also produced a book. We missed each other completely. Wish manoj had put the site up before 1999.

Ok, when I read what Manoj wrote a bit more carefully, I realised that those are just blank slots and he is waiting for more people to send their snaps. Ok, I am not sending mine as you have all (presumably) seen my mug already on the Whats New link. Last night Mini, Ajay and I had dinner together at Ajay's place. We also spoke to Kavery. The time just flew as we recalled names, incidents and developments which took place 17 to 20 years ago!!!! It was just fantastic. I think a reunion party of all ISKians is in order. What does everybody say????

Mini & I had Sandeep over for Dinner on 16th evening and we chatted through the evening trying to remember names with faces, faces with names ... it was like, endless ... and none of us wanted to quit. At a time it was as if we'd go back to school tomorrow morning and check these people out.
Wish, at least some of you were there too !!!

Hey Manoj
How dare you call my jokes Bad. The idea is great but the kind of jokes i plan to send rather not be here on this site or else we'll find an ISK re-Union on Mars or something.
But as a punishment "thou shalt be infested with bad jokes from Sire Ajay Prasad for as long as thou shalt bear...and so it shalt be done".

hey lil sis- there's a lot about your big bro you don't know. Perhaps it will be revealed in this forum over the years.

btw: prithi is correct. Mr. Dubey tried to walk through the huge glass doors the day he landed in Kabul. He later stated he was surprised that they were so clean that he never noticed. LOL

Manoj,
Thanks to this wonderful website, I'm finding out things about you that I never knew existed!! I guess as your little sister back then I wasn't entitled to such "privileged" information. It all comes to light now. I am having such a wonderful time reading everybody's comments and memories of some of the best years of their lives. Thanks for bringing us all together, again.

If there's anyone who has been subjected to "Wrath of Mr Arora", I think I qualify as the top contender. Not only have I been given the "lecture" in his office at the top of his voice, but in the halls, in class, outside the class, in the playing field...you get the picture. Once, I remember being thrown out of Mrs. Jason's class along with (well, I won't name names), but after standing outside for five minutes, we decided to go play basketball. Minutes later Mr. Arora approached and asked why we were not in the English class. I said with no particular regret "Sir, we were asked to leave". His face must have turned 16 shades of crimson before he yelled out another lecture and asked me to stand outside his office the rest of the day and make an apology the next day at assembly. I think I made his moustache curl even more!!

No offense, Mr Arora - The whole school knows I gave you a tough time, at the same time, you are the Best Damn Math teacher I ever had. You're the reason I pursued Computer Sciences and Mathematics and have excelled in both. So, thanks for a wonderful education. I'm sure you didn't mind a bunch of teenagers doing what teenagers do best. You were not hired to win any popularity contests, you were charged with educating us...which you did and did it well. Bravo !!

And Yari, about those names...I really don't think we meant any disrespect to our teachers...now or back then. Some were names of affection while others just seemed to fit! LOL. But you're point is well taken.

Prithi - no picture from the culprit that started this contest bit. Only four pictures so far. Pathetic ! C'mon you guys...let's get those pix in asap.

Ajay Prased - man, you're sending me such old jokes and boring me. If you don't come up with some new material, I'll have to dedicate a page on this site for your bad jokes and subject the entire ISK clan to boredom! Hey, come to think of it, that's not a bad idea. Ok, all in favor of an Ajay Prasad page of jokes say Aye....

Sandeep,I think I did respond from my new email id to your first mail but dont know why I didnt get your subsequent one.Anyway, now that I have your coordinates, will see you when I am in Bangalore next.I still remember Monkeys Paw and how the play still gives me the shivers when I think about it.Dhanmanjiri,I will write and am sure we will meet soon in Pune.I did economics too,a BA in Economics,a Masters in Economics and then a Masters in Development Economics in Canada.Wonder where Rohit Rattanjee is now.I wonder if it will surprise him to know that I got the University Gold medal for my Masters.I guess one does want to tell one's teachers that there are many things we are grateful for.I remember all of them with much affection,DeshPrabhu for all the excitement he brought to Art,Bina for making History so fascinating, Bina,I still remember RC Majumdar and trying to distinguish between centrifugal and centripetal forces in the Tughlak analysis!! KJ Joseph for his unforgettable recitation of the HG Wells quote on Ashoka...I can still recite it perfectly without skipping a beat.Mr and Mrs Jayson, for their quiet sincere dedication,Mr and Mrs Varkey for their genuine affection for us kids.Om Prakash Srivastava,I am sure everyone remembers the flourish with which he would write his name on the Blackboard. My name is OP Srivastava...Om Prakash Srivastava! The gentle Mr and Mrs Bharadwaj. My bitter struggles with higher hindi (after years of marginal acquaintance with the language at an English speaking convent in Hyderabad) were made easier by her quiet, yet firm support.Mr Dubey who never taught us but became etched permanently in collective school consciousness by his very singular exploit of walking through the glass door at Kabul Airport (I think it was). Why do images of Manoj keep popping up at this point? Manoj may have told me about this I think.Mini will, I am sure, remember Mr RN Sharma who taught us Civics and told us about the British and their unhelpful attitude to Indian attempts to gain independence. We even had a song about that ,didnt we,Mini? It went,Row row row your boat...for some unfathomable reason. And will always remember standing in Mr Arora's office,in the force field of his displeasure, getting mightily ticked off for being impudent in Rohit Rattanjee's class. I dont remember ever having got yelled at like that since. His voice was like a whiplash and I had to bite my lip to stop the tears! And I had merely enlightened Mr Rattanjee about that period being a self study period because I noticed that he was planning to teach us instead!I do remember everyone else too but not mentioning them here doesnt mean that I dont.kavery I did write to you.And Manoj,I wanted to ask,did the man who suggested that we have this mystery contest submit his own entry yet?!!yes i mean you Vivek!

This is goes for all other ISKians passing through Bangalore. Nice to see that Prithi has also logged in. I did send you a email on the website soon after it started but obviously I had the defunct email ID! Does Bina remember some of us folks too! I did meet Roshna and Shobhana at Sridhar's marriage several years ago (it was surely more than 12 years ago as my son was not yet born). How are you doing Bina. I am sure you come to Bangalore often. Do get in touch. I am likely to meet Ajay and Mini later this week in Delhi when I am there for a few days. I am sure the numbers logging on the site will cross 100 soon!! Three cheers to Manoj for his great effort

Other nick-names used for various staff also comes to mind...Khasos, Tandu, Bhaua, Tindi and ofcourse, baudarang (as in cucumber). I wonder if they knew about their nick names, hmmmm....
Anyone care to take a guess who these nick names belong to??

thanks bina..send some pictures please, and hyder you lazy bum..did you receive the pictures I sent you..sorry it's been busy with the shahrukh khan show here and I am supposed to fly to houston to meet these guys again..am trying to avoid it-have had enough of these shows and stars-and then again next week iam in michigan for the ravi anoushka shankar and amjad ali khan and aman aayan performing..it is a treat back to back to see two such concerts in a week and meet these guys all over again..amjad ali khan is my hero..he introduced a little bratty teenaged kid who went to interview him many years ago thinking it was amjad khan of sholay, not knowing much about hindustani music and he graciously cancelled all his appointments and gave me a crash course for 3 hours-then he played a dhun from raga pilu and at the end of it I sat there tears streaming down my eyes and goose bumps..I used to play hookey from college and go over to his house when he was in town, and spend hours just chatting with him..his wife would send out amazing food..
I met him and aman and ayan again in 2002 in atlanta and it was as if time stood still..the boys are so amazing as well..so it will be great to see them again and have fun..anoushka is another cutie..she was shocked I knew she listens to metallica one of my favourite groups..and we had such a fun 2 hour interview with non stop giggles..
ah well bina my cousin sister lives in hawaii..so next time you want a vacation you can crash at her place..I try to go there every year-its truly paradise on earth.

hello haider!
sorry i missed out your name in my mesg to tariq.of course i taught u too .u were one of my favourite students ,besides kavita.infact its hard to imagine u as a father of 5.
and i remember the nickname i had --handle --that was courtesy khalid and manoj or maybe their entire class--thats because i used to plait and clip up my hair in a peculiarly handle like manner!!!!
and i still remember the first day i entered std 9 --thats khalids class-i had been given dire warnings as to how uncontrollable they were by the rest of the staff-and i was literally shaking in my shoes ,but i put on a very stern face but somehow u guys were exceptionally gud ,and after that i really enjoyed teaching u --tho u culd be a real handful.
haider ,do u remember the picnic stds 11 and std 10 went with mr joshi --the geog teacher --i dont remember where tho --tho i remember sitting on a rock near the river and dishing out slices of delicious creamy cake made by suhail raoofs mom to all u kids.
what lovely memories --even after 28 yrs -they are so fresh.i do hope i get to hear from u on this site .bye and do give my regards to yr parents..where is shaista now?i remember her as a very pretty girl, alittle shy???

hello tariq,
i did not take any classs for you or shahid at isk, only shaista, and khalid, but i do remember u very well.dint u have rather spiky hair?!!!!anyway, ever since i read that u were working at wwf ,ive been wanting to ask u if u were there in 1999.thats the year 11 kids from all over india were chosen by wwf to attend the millenium conference at hawaii, and my daughter vichitra who was 13 ,was one of them.she had an orientation for a week ,prior to their daparture for the conference at yr head office--lodi estate and i was in and out of it everyday.it was a real wonderful experience for her and she came back with a totally changed perspective --
were u there at that time?

- Monday, September 13, 2004 at 08:18:14 (EDT)
Tariq,
your life's experiences should be written about. have you ever thought about that? If you would like to, send me a write up. I will try and get it published and also put it on my website. All the teachers at ISK were such a personal experience to all of us because of the small numbers; the ones I remember were pretty awesome, and people like Mrs Jason, and Rohit Ratanjee, and Bina and Mr Deshprabhu really left their impact..rohit ratanjee mademe fall in love with a dry subject like economics and develop a passion for statistics. wonder where he is.
there is a favorite little anecdote that I always relate to- a woman was going on a train and it was raining-she saw the raindrops mingle and part, becoming individual drops again but taking something from the other..and so just like that when we reach out and touch someone we always leave an impact..

KK Sir,
I am glad you are still there to guide us to the right way of thinking. I shall never for get the books you made me read and turned my mind forever in to one that learned to respect nature. “AKU AKU” was one of those books. The one was “The RA Expedition”. I had to return these books to you after reading them. In my mind though, they are still with me. I haven’t lost them. Neither will I ever.

I am doing exactly what you mentioned – “talk to people who are less fortunate”. I talk with them and about them to those who don’t even know they exist. Wildlife conservation in India was always a preserve of the elite who blamed our indigenous communities for damaging nature. A handful of thinking people in India have managed to change that. Today, we talk of people and conservation. WWF is a big global organization. A lot of work on “conservation for people” outside India and with in India has influenced minds. I came from a pure conservation-no people background (trained as a wildlife biologist), and soon became the only voice in WWF India (with a handful from other WWF offices) running against the prevalent thought. Three years ago WWF India started working with people. I work with communities for conservation in the North East (tribal people in Arunachal and Assam) and in the Nilgiris and Eastern Ghats(in the heart of Veerappan country). I have helped set up projects with the Baigas and Gonds in Maikal hills. In my office in New Delhi I am still the lone ranger who insists on asking “difficult” questions. I have managed to go far but there is a lot more to be done. And the further I go, I am able to see more than I saw ever before that needs to be fathomed.

It is obvious that you are way beyond me. I am still parochial and firmly believe in working ‘with my people’ and ‘for my people’. I have traveled extensively in the west, South and SE Asia. This hasn’t helped me break my Indian shackles. I cannot think global…yet. May be some day you will make me read a book that will do it for me.

You have worked on a documentary on the amazing Amazon. I would love to go there ... Never been to SA. I am sure you have worked on many more films. Would love to see them, or know about them. And, possibly, would love to make one with you.

We need to meet.

I am not exactly having a wonderful time…(I work with an NGO)… but life has been great. I have loved every moment of it so far… this exciting website is a part of that fun.

Kavita,
We will wait for Dec 1. There is lot to talk about.
I have dropped the ‘ji’ … but the lollipops will be appreciated.

Tariq!
Good to hear from you and I’m glad you’re still asking all the right questions! Yes, there’s lots of things to do in India but the important thing is to keep asking the right questions wherever we are in the world. For a start, to begin to talk to people who are less fortunate than we are, and to do what we can, in our little way, to set the record straight. Life is too short but we spend all our time pretending it’s forever!
In the late seventies I organized a trek which would take in some of the well known monasteries in Bhutan but by the time the permits came through I was offered a job at the India School, Kabul. I don’t waste my time wondering whether I made the right choice!
Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time. Keep at it!
Affectionate regards, kk

Shahid - If I don't get invited to your reception, I will be posting some pictures of you, you never knew existed...
Spoke to Khalid too as he was getting ready to pick up your parents from the airport. Talked at length about this and that. Seems like the years just melt away and it is like yesterday once more.
Great to see such participation here. I'm working on re-designing the site a bit so everyone can have access to all emails and phone numbers. Typically I'd like to provide a secure method to do so. I want to do my part in keeping all your email addresses out of spammers hands.

Hi Khalid,
please write to me on my email address kavita@kavitachhibber.com, so I can give you all the news, instead of boring every one about my kids..you know us mothers-we just sit and brag! I sent hyder some pictures-anyway in a nutshell- I have 3 awesome kids.. 2 girls and my son is stuck in the middle-the older two are saintly, the youngest one Pranavi is the naughty one-the oldest Nishita is 17 and 5.10 and looks like zeenat aman used to look, but only better!Gautam is the saintly one-very calm, serene and cerebral-he is 11, Pranavi is 9 and the most Indian of my kids- she has been learning kathak since she was 4, loves Indian films and filmstars and she is the one who goes to meet all of them when I cover shows..she is starting to learn tabla..and if you meet her, your sons will start to look like saints as well! she is very naughty and a tomboy- gone on the mother ofcourse-the father was supposedly very saintly too as a child-she has laid all my theories of boys being naughtier than girls to rest.
I will send you some pictures as well..
your mom was too cute- we were talking about you and I said remember aunty how serious Khalid was and I used to tease him by running my hand across his face and he would look so mad-and she said -masha allah ab to khalid sab se lambe sab se sundar nikle hain! Tariq did you fall in love with bharathi in school itself? aap to khalid bhai se bahut zyada agey nikal gaye-woh ladkiyon se door bhagte rahe or aap!!tauba tauba-bharathi ke peechey ki bhag daud mein he sar ke bal safed ho gaye-but for every good thing there is a price to pay!
kalyani was the good one..but I was the fiery one and gave mom a lot of heartburn..she says she still doesnt know how I actually turned out right in spite of being a tom boy and so hot headed..

I have 2 sons Bilal and Ameer. Bilal is 13 and Ameer is 11. Bilal is a sober guy like his dad. He is 5'8" (tall boy) while Baba (Ameer) is 4'10". They are good swimmers and take interest in sports. Baba excells in atheltics and soccer while Bilal is a good crickter. My better half Naheed teaches school. She is a dedicated wife and a very strict mother. Larkon ko control karna mushkil kaam hai. But u and Kalyani must have been even more difficult for Uncle and Aunti. Tell me about your kids. Lots of love

Yeah Tariq- who're you calling oldie, man. Last I met you in Delhi, you had more grey in your hair than the grey skies of a hurricane. You're only as old as you wanna be. Me, I'm still 19. LOL

Great to see Prithi has found us too. Not even a month ago, I knew only three people from ISK. We're upto 35 and moving fast!!!

hey Tariq who are you calling oldie! aunty says khalid is the most youthful, handsomest and tallest of everyone in the family. and like the late singer mallika pukhraj who sang-abhi to main jawan hoon! !now be careful what you say about me, otherwise you may get your cheeks pulled this time-its never too late to start!

Hi Manoj,
Look these oldies (KA and KC) giving compliments to each other and talking about cheeks. Manoj, you have done a great job!! We are all going wacko on this site. I have not accesssed any web-site so many times in two days.

Yeah Preethi, I kind of spelt your name incorrectly the two 'ee's instead of the single 'i'. What is important is that you got to log on and be a part of the action here. Where is Ranjan Nambiar? Does he know about the site?

Hi Khalid,
my you have actually learnt to pay a compliment! I must say bahut sudhar gayen hai aap! from the serious touch me not guy! must be the result of all my cheek pinching!
good to hear from you. It was indeed wonderful to talk to Hyder and catch up. I have such fond memories of your parents, especially aunty who cooked some amazing food and I still have a sharara she stitched for me for a function in record time. It was also great to share memories of Kabul with uncle.
I may be coming back with my mom to delhi enroute jammu around 1st december..hope to see you then!
take care

Manoj, thank you for this website which seems to have almost magically brought so many of us together.Lovely to see familiar names and feel all those memories come flooding back. What is especially nice though is the feeling that no one's really changed.Everyone sounds exactly as I remember them from so many years ago.A very warm hello to all of you and look forward to catching up by email and then hopefully in person at some stage.I live in Sydney,Australia but do get to visit India twice a year on work when I usually go to Bangalore,Delhi and Kerala where my parents now live.Would love to hear from you...Am signing into the directory as well. And Manoj,do we then ask you for email ids and contact details of people we want to write to?

Hi Kavita,
I did not know that about Khalid Bhai. His kids will have a big laugh about it. Kalyani is still slim - WOW! I am fat. I write too. A lot of it is on wildlife conservation. I work with WWF in India and am looking at large mammal conservation. "Bowler of maidens", did you write that peice on Imran Khan? I remember having seen it. What do you write about now? I was in NY last month attending a conference on Willdife at Columbia University. Wish I had known about you. We could have met.

KK SIR!! Saw your entry. What on earth are you doing in the jungles of Amazon while we have so much to work on in India??

hey I got a 9 out of ten from mrs jason on my essays, and realised later how much her being strict helped. I managed a distinction in my english paper and ended up becoming a writer. Tariq, not just Farid's cheeks, I used to drive Khalid nuts by rubbing my hand across his face and he would get irritated and with me and I would laugh!
great to see so many signings since I was last on this site.
ah well my picture is already there so I guess no surprises..suhail great to hear about you. anshu and I were remembering you. I will send your contact info to him so he can get in touch and will get in touch with you soon!
take care all
great to read all the good stuff here.
Kalyani doesnt do any suryanamaskars any more-she is too lazy to get up early and do her namaskars in any form to the sun, but she is still as slim!

Yes guys let us do it - send pix. Manoj is going to keep books and be the bara Babooo. (Pls tell us how to get the pictures across to you Manoj.)

Remember Thulli!. I just spoke to Kavery and Ajay Prased. Man the word is going round.

I remeber Kavitha Chibber pulling at Farid's cheeks and her sister the slim Kalyanai doing the 'yoga namaskar peechay say'. And Suroor Mehta, the quite one with short hair. There was a girl called ? Bhatt in our Class - Manoj can you pls give her first name. And Mrs Jason - write the best essay and get a pidly six and a half marks out of ten. She never awarded more than that to any one. Mr Virkey "sat rupaiah na me giri". He was a great guy - made us play a lot.

Vandana Shukla - can some one find her ?

Sandeep Shastri I remember you very well. Man you have changed a lot. I was in Bangalore a little further away from Hebbal .. at a resort attending a conference...came back three days ago. I keep going there.

Vivek - your idea is a good one, however, getting latest pictures from all you guys is like pulling teeth...not easily accomplished. But I will try.

OK everyone - the game is called "mystery person". Submit your latest photos directly to me at : mystery@iskaa.org

I will number the pictures and post them on page. You will then have to identify the person. Let's run the game during September for collecting photos, and the first week of October to play the game (if you lazy bums, actually send in photos).
First one to identify all correctly shall win our "Inspector Clouseau" award!

Ready...Set...Send photos !

This is great. ISK is born again.

I logged on to the site and the first phone number I got was of Mini Prasad - called her up only to find that she has been living next to my office for many years. The next hour we were together chatting her house.

Manoj you have done a great job. We love you for it.

The last time we met was at Dilli Haat with a number of other friends. We had to be thrown out by the security after midnight. I wish I had known about the site a month earlier for I was in Washington and New York for 15 days. I am sure you remember Shampa Chanda. She is in New York. I will get in touch with her and tell her about the site. I will soon be there again. Untill next time then.

Sita Ram is in London - no contacts available. Farid Malik is in Delhi so I heard a lomg time ago. Manoj, Mini and I were talking about getting all the delhi and nearby guys to get together on a reunion. Could you help us put together a list to which all of us will contribute information.

Right now my mind is working faster than I can key in. Where on earth is Ragini (??iginy) Deshpandey?. I am told Jyothi Pathak is in Japan. Wonder what she is doing there with the japs?

It was indeed a pleasure to see a well-nurtured web site giving information about the people you grew up with. Manoj, your labor of love has borne fruit. This web site has partially offset the deprivation one feels in knowing that you cannot easily go back to the place you grew up at. More importantly, the people you grew up with are now in touch with each other and are able to tread the nostalgic paths of yester years, utilizing this common forum.
Kavita, Suroor, Mini, Dhanmanjiri, Alka, Sandeep, Lalit, Khalid, Deepak and Manoj, it was wonderful to get to know what you are doing and where you are. I look forward to corresponding with you. The pictures of the sports day (without the famous vaulting horse), of the infamous basketball team with Ravi as the sharpshooter, of the friends and teachers served as a reminder of a common and pleasant past.
I came back to Delhi in 1997 and did my pre-medical from Hans Raj College. I completed my medical schooling from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi and came to NY in 1984. I did two years of research in pulmonary medicine, and did six year training in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. I am currently working at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. My wife, Sabiha, is a radiologist, and we have two children, Sana (13 years) and Sahir (10 Years). We live with my parents in Long Island.

Nice to see u online as well. Hope all is well with you and Aunty. Vicky is in Chennai. I have asked him to register as well but has been busy, perhaps over the weekend he will do so. Vivek is sailing. Hope your sisters are well too.

Hi Bina, Roshna & Shobhana,
We have been getting news of each other from Aunty and Shobhana. The last I saw Roshna was as a bride and Shobhana we met during Vicky's wedding. Bina, all of us from ISK will land up at Vasant's wedding ( whenever it is) and make it a grand reunion. After Manoj's remarkable effort anything is possible. It is a bit difficult to picture you as a Mum-in-law!!!!

Hi everyone! I was in Delhi from 26th to 31st August 2004. Ajay told me about this ingenious site created by none other but "Thaaa Manoj...Where you caaaammmmeeee....." remember Mr. Bharadwaj? From Kabul when dad was in Bern Sanjeev Sud came to visit us. Later Vandana Sharma came with her parents. Also Narula Uncle came but Ajay & I were studying in Delhi then. Later dad went to Nairobi. I started my training with Air India. On the flight while I was on Ramp duty I recognised Mr. P. Sharma who was on his way to Bombay (then). He had migrated to South Africa.

I have been going through everyone's comments and frankly I have never been so nostalgic. Honestly many times I must have thought about you guys. I reached Lucknow and came accross Fehmi's wife, which started a new chapter in our lives. Every evening we sat over drinks and dinner we would start out and ended up being boycotted by wives and nicely sozzled at the end of it. together we went through memory lane many times. The Unforgetable ISK. At times I have felt how unfortunate were those who never saw those times. Love to you all............Vijay

Dear Manoj,
Time really flies. It just seems like yesterday. But today I am 43 year old young man with a 13 year old daughter Anam, studying in class X and a 10 year old son Areeb, in class V. My wife Saba, is in the teaching profession and is also involved with Amway. It is fun watching your children grow. I am enjoying every moment of it. Whenever I see my daughter go for movies or parties or hang around with friends, I always go back down the memory lane to my Kabul days when you, Sud and I had a hell-of-a-time. Eating siggi's finger chips, stealing chips packets & coke bottles from school canteen shack during the winter vacation and burying the packets in the snow, going for english movies dubbed in dari (persian), eating hot sausages wrapped in Afghani nan ouside the Park Cinema, listening to BGs, Abba, Niel Daimond, Carpentars, etc., etc. Remember the day after our class X board exam when we all (including the girls) broke down all the tables and chairs in the class and our Princi Mr. Arora walked in. I can go on and on.
Life has treated me fairly well. I am in Bhopal now (the town famous for the world's biggest industrial disastor in 1984 - leaking of MIC gas from the Union Carbide Plant killing thousands & thousands of people). I am heading the printing and publication unit of Hindustan Times in Bhopal and is responsible for its business and distribution in central India - Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidharbha (i.e., north-western part of Maharashtra).
These days my parents are with me. They are based at Aligarh, but keep travelling between Bhopal and Bangalore, where my elder brother Bazmi has settled down. Yesterday when I told them about this site they really got excited.
How about you and your family? Also, let me have Sud's e-mail address.

We have been in banalore for 5 years. Hyd. is not too far from here. In case u visit this place , do let me know. Sunil is in singapore and my parents are in delhi. Extremely sad to hear about uncle. How's your mum? Uncle misra was in jaipur last that i heard . Manoj works in delhi but have no idea about the other two. Will check with my parents and let you know. Do u remember the radhakrishnan's , were they in kabul before u people came?
I believe their daughter is in hyd. too. While reading the guestbook sometimes feel hv become so ancient as we are talking of a period 25 yrs back but strangely that time is strangely so vivid in my memory. I guess good times are like that. Do fill me up on your news and on shashi too.

Dear Fehmi - it's wonderful to have you join us. I've been searching for you, dear friend, for a long, long time. How have you been? You're right...there is a lot of catching up to do. Sud and I talk about you often. I met Sud in Toronto a few years back and have been in touch with him constantly. He is in Kuala Lampur as you must know by now if you browsed thru the site.
Be sure to add your info to the directory.
I know I'll be spending a lot of time talking to you old friend!

hello everyone!
It was sheer nostalgia ,going through this site ,and brought back vivid memories of those wonderful days in kabul.I was just 20 ,fresh from college, and u were a lively bunch of 16 yr olds and quite a handful!!!But it was a great joy to teach u history ,and i was kept mentally very alert trying to keep pace with your eager questions--some quite relevant and others not quite so!!!.I was maam at school ,but bina out of school to all u kids and remember the fun parties we had,the crazy games ,the delicious khana and the boogeying too!!!
I was Agony Aunt to quite a few ,being privy to many soul stirring confessions- of crushes that were sometimes reciprocated and sometimes not!!And of course ,we teachers in the staff room ,were quite aware of what was happenning at ISK , tho we pretended not to do so.
Well, as u all know i was married in 1976,and have settled down at sivakasi --thats the place in south india, where they manufacture patakas, and matches ,and also have the largest concentration of printing presses.i have a son --vasant --he's 25 --,and a daughter Vichitra -18.Vasant is in the family business and like all anxious mammas ,we are looking for the rite girl!!vichitra is doing Hotel management at chennai --where roshna too lives.
it was so gud to read all the mesgs from all of u--kavita.shashi,fahmi,the terrible twins--Ajay and vijay,Mini---mini do u remember the time there was a terrible smell in class and we cudnt find out where -till we realised that it was from your desk --- 3 days old chappati and potato bhaji left by mistake over a long weekend in your tiffin box?!!!!!!!gud times and fun times --werent they?!!Manoj --a big thank you for bringing all of us together again.lets all meet up once again ,sometime soon.My Email address-binarajasingh@rediffmail.com

Hi Manoj, This is great. Brings back so many memories of those wondeful years from 1974 to 1979. I have been moving around in India from Delhi to Lucknow to Patna and now to Bhopal where I am working with Hindustan Times. My only touch with the ISK days has been Ajay & Vijay. But this is really fantastic. There is so much of catching up to do with so many friends. Bye for now.

Dear Manoj

You have mentioned the guy where we used to go practicing for singing in Fehmi's Building. He was Pt. V.S. Deshpande who used to attend school mass also. Remember "Khada Himalay, Bata raha hai, daro na aandhi paani se, Khare raho apne path par sab, kathinai toofani mein"...
Please send me a mail on my e-mail : ajaymehul@hotmail.com. I have loads to share and send. I am in touch with Fehmi and have recently visited him also. He has also visited me here in Delhi a couple of times.... Both our wives are already sick of Kabul talks ... which always seem to surface sometime or another!
I'll wait for your mail.
Love and great going !!!

Hi guys. I've been noticing messages being passed on and yet most of us can't correspond. Please, everyone, do write in your e-mail IDs so that we can get this story going. Actually i am thinking of a day when all of us can meet at some point on this globe and ..... who knows it may become a historical site....with perhaps the largest turnout of ex-students in our history. I have added my E- mail into this precious directory.
Lots of Love to all

Kavita, speaking of innocence and crushes...In '75 or '76, can't remember exactly, Bina Anandadoss handed me a copy of "Summer of 42" and asked me to read it. It was the first book I actually read cover to cover and certain parts of the book over and over and over again! That book and, by association, Bina may have been the start of not just reading novels but also having innocent crushes. Later, at USIS, I saw Jennifer O'neill in the movie Summer of 42, Anne Bancroft in the Graduate, Ali McGraw in Love Story...and many more. So, Bina...thanks for the wonderful memories.

On a separate note....

I do want to remind everyone that this is a public website, so if you leave your phone numbers and emails in the guestbook, be aware of spammers, pranksters and other 'no-gooders' that have software to scan and harvest websites for emails and phone numbers. I strongly suggest adding your name and email info in the directory (add name) page. The info you submit there is secure and I can pass along contact information to whoever needs it privately. Consider yourselves warned!
If you like to send out info to the entire group or send them a link, let me know and I can post the info here. Thankyou for coooperating.

Hi every one-good to hear from you all. I will give you a buzz when I am in torronto next Shashi. I havent interviewed krin ahluwalia. Usually most of the people I interview are those who come to Atlanta where Iam based, or special interviews when I am flown out by the publishers. Today as a matter of fact Iam interviewing a wonderful singer hariharan, and then next week shahrukh khan saif ali and gang will be here for a bollywood show.
sandeep I will write to you separately since you sent me an email.
Suroor remember mrs aggarwal who used to always call you shhroor? such a sweet lady..the last time I met sharad was way back in the 1980s-what is your number in switzerland..my home number here is 770-751-7281, though Iam more accessible on email..usually its non stop interviews, stories to be worked on..so often when some of the interviewees are droning on I keep answering emails! how is bina? I remember her with lot of affection-she made me fall in love with history, and then my brother had to nag me until I gave up the idea and did english in college-he felt I should be a writer and history was not the way to go about it. I still love it, and have her to thank for-she was also one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen and for years I tried to get a tan in the sun to look brown and sultry-didnt quite succeed!
I remember mr and mrs bhardwaj and Mr arora and Mr joseph-remember how I stood up to mr joseph and corrected him in class over a history lesson and he got so mad he kicked me out and the school went on strike!
It was funny..-now I laugh but poor guy- I made his life miserable and arora asking lalit why do you say kavita is your sister-dont you have enough already?
and all those crushes in school-okay breathe easy I wont open the can of worms for that! but when I see the kids of today I realise how innocent we all were..people email me pictures please..Iwant to know how you all have grown and what have you morphed into..my mug is on my website in the bio section at kavitachhibber.com
more later

Hi everyone!
It's so funny--I was going to write and ask if anyone had any news from Kavita, Alka and Lalit, and Kavita and Lalit signed in! My mother is well, Kavita--she lives in Hyderabad. I lost my father in 91. I live in Geneva, Switzerland--have been here for a while. Waiting for Mini and Kalyani to sign in.

Ajay, Vijay--do you remember the time Mini won 500 afghanis and invited all of us and Prithi for a meal at the restuarant down the road? We started with dessert and then went on to chicken. When the waiter came with the bill, Mini pulled out what she thought was a 500-afghani bill from her purse and it was 10 afghanis! We had to run back to the house to get the money, leaving the two of you as guarantee. The respective parents had got home by then (I was staying with the Nambiars), and we got such a yelling for sneaking off. (Although I can remember Uncle Nambiar was trying not to laugh!) And Prithi's brother, Ranjan, who was a kid at that time was really upset that we'd gone without him.
It's so good to get in touch with everyone again.

I've lost touch with her but have some good leads I'm following to track her down. I'm also in touch with Hyder Aziz, I believe you remember him too. Wow! It's amazing how some names from the past you remember like it was yesterday.
Ajay Prasad - "Saale", where the heck have you been? I met you last in Sita Ram Bazaar nearly 24 years ago. Do you remember?? You, Vijay and I did some fun stuff that day! How's Vijay? And Mini !!! Hey, Mini - where are you and why have you not signed in yet? I have pictures of you guys that I'll post here soon.
Anyone know the whereabouts of Vivek Singh??

KK was teaching English Lit. in grades 9-12. But, to some of us, he was more than just an English teacher. He was a friend, a mentor, someone who you could talk to etc. etc. Listen, when you're 16-17 years old there's a lot of stuff going thru your head and you need someone other than your parents to be a part of certain things. KK and PS were two such guys. I remember Sud, Sexy and I hanging out with PS and KK on the weekends for hours, listening to music, talking photography, movies and just chillin'.
Good times...real good times...

KK !!! Welcome!
Finally, after all this chat, we get to hear from you. Do you realize it has been TWENTY-FIVE years !! And to find out that you have been living in New York...that's crazy, man! I lived in NY from 1979 to 1988 before moving to Virginia, and I have been here ever since. Must have made at least 100 trips to NY...only if I had known. You must send me your contact info using the link on the Directory page of this site. In fact, I have a trip to NY coming up for the Labor day weekend and I got to get a glimpse of that beard of yours (grey as it may be...lol).
Funny, you mentioned BeeGees SNF tape...I still listen to that damn thing along with my kids and yes, we still blast the CD at close to peak volume. Oh, and that trek in COLD Karezamir, I have the 8mm movie that I made that day and of, course it is on DVD now that I'm into that sort of things. I have tons of pictures that I've digitized and am in the process of restoring them to DVD's and slowly post them here. You and I have some catching up to do!! Send your contact info!!
Again, it's great to have you here and please, keep checking back, as time allows. We are all busy doing stuff but it's certainly a joy to reminisce.

Hi All!
I had an e-mail from Suroor a long time ago telling me about the web site but I’ve been away in Brazil and Colombia working on a documentary about the Amazon, and only got back last week.
How wonderful to hear voices from a part of my life that I thought was long forgotten! Unlike most of you I was in Kabul for only a little over a year but I still have amazing memories of the place. I think we are all very lucky to have been there when we did, considering all that has happened to it since.
Hi Manoj, long time ! I think you’ve done a fantastic job putting this website together. We’ve all been fast asleep in our little caves and you’ve done a great job waking everybody up!! Didn’t you have a tape of the BG’s SNFever which was religiously played on the school bus every morning?! And about that trek we were all on – I have one very strong memory ….it was really cold.

I haven’t met anybody from India School Kabul for a very long time except for Suroor in New York, and she was v.v. busy that day, stalking Al Pacino!
Ranade talks of meeting me in Bombay but let me tell you how.
In ’91 or ’92 I was visiting a friend there, and one of the people in the room seemed, as they say, vaguely familiar but I didn’t know from where. When it was time to go, the guy who was vaguely familiar said he would drop me, and so I got behind him on his mobike and off we went. I asked him what his name was and he said, Ranade. I suddenly remembered a Ranade in India School, Kabul and…
KK - (screaming into the wind) Hey, were you ever in Kabul? You seem to remind me of…..
R - (also screaming) Yeah, Ranade, I’m the same Soumitra Ranade from India School, Kabul… you’re KK, right?
KK….Yes, I’m KK… but why the hell didn’t you say so before?
R…. I wasn’t sure. You didn’t have a beard then….
KK…(confessing) I grew a beard! Pull over.
We have a good laugh and look for a place to have a beer!

Do you remember that, Ranade? I suppose you’ve grown a beard now!

It’s great to be in touch with all of you again.
Stay well, and Cheers!
kk

Shashi - I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I think we are all getting to the stage where we have aging parents and have to bear the loss of loved ones. I think you are mistaken on the pictures. Ravi Chawla is the number 45 in the basketball team picture on the SportsDay 1976 page. Rakesh Malhotra and Avtar Singh joined our class after you had left the school.

Hey Manoj..I was a lil confused about the names of the people in the picture while i showed it to my daughter...From what i remember i thought it was Madhu Popli(or did she get married to a sharma cuz it wasnt Sharma b4) I was under the impression the guy you name rakesh malhotra was actully Ravi chawla was this some new who joined after i left. As for Avatar Singh i thought he was dharmveer singh was that just a nick name ???

Shashi - just realized from your message that you are in Canada. Are you visiting or settled there? I just returned from Toronto and before that (in May) I was in Montreal. If you had posted last week, I would have looked you up! I met Sanjiv Sud in Toronto a few years back. Which city in Canada are you located in? My guess is (based upon your phone number) Toronto - somewhere near Scarborough or Markham. I often visit Canada as I have a few friends and relatives in Calgary, Montreal and Toronto. Let me know.

Shashi - welcome. I remember you quite well from the music and singing practices with Vivek Singh and the Prasad brothers. I can't remember the name of the guy whose house we went for practice but it was in a building where Neeta Thadani and Fahmi Rizwan used to live. Does anyone remember that guys name?

Hi Manoj, it has been very nostalgic to go through all the comments, pictures and updates of ISK alumni. When Mr. Sahni forwarded your website, I immediately told my Mom(Indra, who taught at ISK for 10+ yrs.), my brother (Gautam) and my sister (Geetu).

What a great idea! You did a wonderful job to unite all the alumni. I hope students from my class will also find out about this website (I was there from PreK thru 5th in 1980). Some of the names I remember are: Monica Rekhi, Sheetal Raj, and Bindu Walia. If anyone reading this remembers or knows of their whereabouts, please let me know.

Thanks again for putting this together.

I got to know of this site from my brother Soumitra and then also got a call from Sandeep--- we were in the same class. Most happy to get to know of this site. I was in ISK for only one year 1976-77. Saw the directory and some names were familiar Vivek Subbiah, Suhail Raof from my class,Pooman Narula and Kavery also known to me. Any idea where Prithi Nambiar and Mini Prasad are?
I am in Pune University, Head of the Economics Dept.
More next time.

Hi! Suroor
Yes,I do remember you. Infact I should have acknowledged you much earlier.Am sorry. Infact I did enquire after you and Priti Nambiar when Sandeep spoke to me last. It is always such a pleasure to hear from old friends. The time we spent in Kabul were great days.Nearly 12 yrs back, Sandeep and Shaila spent some time with us in Kerala and it was such a nice feeling to know that the affection from childhood days still exists and always will. It will be great to meet up with you when you come down to India. We have so much to catch up with.
take care.

Hi Soumitra,
great to hear from you. The only friend I am in touch with is Sangeeta. Its really nostalgic to get in touch with old friends. Nice to know that you are in the movies!! I am in Delhi (NOIDA) and Sangeeta is in Bangalore. Keep in touch

Hi Kavery Bopiah-Subbiah!!! (How well you managed the rhyme!!)
Of course I remember you. Actually after I opened the site I got so excited that I just read a few notes on the guest book and immediately joined in. Its only now that I have managed to read all the entries… and sure enough all you guys are here!!! Hi Sangeeta! How are you? Which part of the world are both of you in?
Actually instead of sending old pictures we should all send in our recent pictures! Sandeep’s was a real shocker!!
Surinder is in Delhi…has a textile business and Angle is in the US. I am in regular contact with Surinder. He is the SAME…I think all of us are…aren’t we? In some way…

Hi Manoj,
I have a few pics to send but dont know how to do it. pls let me know.
Hi Soumitra,
You remember me, we were class mates till the 9th. How are Surinder and Rajiv "angle". I remeber Surinder's stupid song "open door this someone....". And Jyoti D is Dandona.
I have a class pic when Mr. Dube was our class teacher. I'll be posting it soon.

I also had a brother. Jaidev. His classmates were Ajay/Vijay Prasad, Sunil Malhotra. He too is in Pune... has a design firm.

And Manoj, Khalid was senior to me and Shahid was junior. I was with Arun Dhawan, Giridhar Rao, Sangeeta Gupta, Jyoti D(something). No idea where they all are now.

Soumitra - I recall the last name, Ranade, but can't seem to put a face to the name. Were you with Tariq Aziz or Shahid Aziz?
You are right about me getting in trouble all the time! I think public apologies during morning assembly had become a routine with me. I think during the last two years of high school, I must have made appearances at assembly at least once every two weeks. I was not very proud of that, though, I must admit, looking back now I think it was yet another record that I held at the school ;)
Find those pictures if you can and I'll be glad to post them here.

This really is amazing! Hi Manoj ! You wouldn't remember me. I was junior to you by a year or two. But I remember you very clearly. (As someone who would get into trouble all the time!) During these 25 years I have met a few people from ISK. Am in touch with Surinder Popli and Rajeev Angal (who were in my class)Only last month I met Mr. Arora at a Spic Macay convention in IIT Mumbai. Felt very emotional. Almost had tears in my eyes. What a man!!

And Sanjeev Sud!! Do you still play TT ?
Oh yes! The chilgozas, the donkey, the 8 afs Coke! Pramod Sharma and KK!
Met KK some ten years back...had a few drinks with him! Relived those days but then lost him because those were the pre-email days.
I am in Bombay. I make films. Some of you might have heard of the one I made last year. Jajantaram Mamantaram.

I have some Kabul pictures too. Will have to dig them out. Will post them soon.
Great stuff Manoj.

I think the janitor's name was Malik Khan and the older guy was Baagwaan. I also have a picture of these guys, belive it or not, and I'll post it here soon. I'm in Toronto right now at a wedding so I don't have access to my huge pile of pictures at the moment. I aslo have a picture of our bus driver (can't remember the name).

Yes, it was Vinitha Dudeja. It's funny, used to happen every time she got excited and launched into a speech! What was the name of the janitor? He was a really nice man. Wonder what happened to him. I remember we used to have a cabinet, and I was minister of information!!!! Did that tradition continue? Sandeep, weren't you minister of something?

Manoj, I'm so glad you set this up. It's a great way of getting in touch again and reviving old memories. Though I have to say all this talk about being in class 1 in 76 makes me feel really old!

Mrs Arora was my class teacher and I was also

Went to 5 schools after Kabul and its not easy putting
faces to names any more.

Great to read about every one, Its like an emotional roller coaster, its like reliving your childhood. All the names sound so familar, I am just having a hard time putting a face in front of all of them.

Speaking of Science...when I discovered the reason why Sodium metal was stored in oil...there was an experiment I conducted in the boys room. Hi Manoj,
Thanks for keeping the memory of good ole days in Kabul alive.
The images of our time in Afghanistan are embedded in my mind like they were carved there. I still remember everything about my first day of school in KG (The school was at a different location, then) until I left when Mrs. Aurora was our Classroom Teacher.

Kabul was definitely the best place I ever lived in and I hope I get the opportunity to revisit it some day with my boys.
