2005

Season's greetings and a very happy 2006! Hope you're all well and having a good time celebrating.

I'm logging on after ages--don't know where these past few weeks have gone! Or the year, for that matter. Do you get the feeling that, as you get older, time just seems to fly? A year in school used to go on forever.

All the best,

Suroor

Reference Princy Arora's mug shot.....A similar thought crossed my mind when I saw it yesterday.......But then, hasn't he already been on at least one most wanted list? ha ha! By the way, the Prince Charles joke was too good!

Hi Vivek

Welcome to the site! I am sure that Manoj would have told you of the fun and games and the global chase that was undertaken to find you including the discovery of the number of Vivek Singhs listed in telephone directories in Vienna and Australia! The directory of the Association of Diplomats has Uncle Singh's Indore number but it must be an old one.

Walk good!
Cheers

I had mentioned there that I had an opportunity to meet Principal Arora and Madam Arora last week. They are both connected with a school called the Lotus International School. I told them about the website and they promised to log on. They were making enquiries about everyone and I did tell them about my meetings with Manoj, Vijay and Dhanmanjiri recently. They were delighted to know of where all of us have reached.

Thanks Vatsala,
please send me an email mentioning what you did here and we can use it in letters to kavita section. Rahul's piece is priceless...he is just a terrific writer and an even nicer human being..it got a lot of laughs..he is in new york right now and will be happy to know you enjoyed the piece..we have had almost 7 to 800 hits per hour since the issue went online at midnight our time..I have some more celebrities coming on board next month..I'm also going to be interviewing people from other communities to make it an interethnic mag..great learning experiece since the world is becoming so global.
cheers!

Kavita

Went on your website again and had a look. Marvellous would be an understatement. Loved Rahul Khanna's piece on his hard drive. Went through the same experience in early January this year when mine went down with the virus, so can well relate to his experience. Now if this does not get everyone curious, I don't think anything will! By the way, how many hits this month?

Suroor, reading your message, I recalled the donkey - did he belong to the gardener or was he the school mascot? Was too young at the time to remember such a vital detail!

Lots of love

Hi Vijay,

You've really stirred up memories. I remember Charanjit singing Zindagi Ke Safar Me. Do you guys remember the time we had a final exam--our class was on the ground floor--and there was a tremor? Everyone was ordered to leave through the windows and some people (Vijay?) got answers from friends, went back in after the tremor had subsided and did really well!! And the donkey outside who used to bray at crucial points in the class.

Hellooooo Everyone,

Chitoor Asti? Khoob Asti? Chuca-Moocha Khob Ast? Digar, Chee haal waal dari?

How are you all - My dear ISKAAers ? I just got an email from Manoj. Here is what is says..
-------------------------------------------------------------
Vijay,
here's the link to the guestbook at ISKAA...you lazy bum!
http://www.iskaa.org/guestbook.htm
also forward to Anju so she can see the pictures.
Later.
- Mr T
-------------------------------------------------------------

So I finally got off my pro-cras-ti-na-ting (oooooh big word!) Lay-zeee bum and here I am meeting and greeting the old gang. So where do I start? So many thoughts come to my mind. I am overwhelmed!

Let's start with the dinner I had with Sandeep Shastri and Manoj last week. Had a great time at Manoj's place. Stayed late and yakked about a whole bunch of stuff. Good food, good wine, good company. Manoj has posted some pics for 'all to see. The lamb chops were mouth-watering!!

I had met Sandeep in Bangalore a couple of years ago and had kept in touch with him off and on. Manoj and I have been in touch pretty much since I left Kabul in 77. He was in NY and I was in DC. Eventually, he moved to the DC area in 87 (Manoj pls verify..). In fact for a few years we even worked togther. That was lots of fun.

Manoj had been talking about an ISK website for quite some time. Lo and behold, one day (June 25,04 to be exact-I'm a packrat-I've lots of old emails) I got an email from him that the site was up. Of course, I logged on and was the FIRST guy to sign up. Then I dropped off (that's the lazy bum part). Got yelled at by Manoj many times and I said "Yeah-Yeah Bore mat kar Yar, I'll get around to it". So here I am - more than a year later. Sorry Manoj - but you already know I'm lazy :-)

I'm reading some of the posts and chuckling to myself. So much of the personalities come right thru in the writings. I have only seen the 05 stuff. I'm sure there is some great stuff in the 04. Will get to it soon.

So,let's start with my classmates - Here come the memories...

Sandeep Shastri - I have already mentioned. I remembeber he was the guy who used to listen to the news in the morning because we had to post it on the bulliten board. Of course, that responsibility was rotated. I would always forget to listen to the news. He would help me out. Once, I made up the news. I think I got into trouble. Also, did you know Sandeep Saab has written 4 books? He's promised he'll bring an autographed copy for me next time.

Vivek Subbiah - I talked to him a couple of months ago. What a riot! He is truly enjoying life. He was on a ship going thru Charleston and Jacksonville. I tried to meet him in Jacksonville, but couldn't make it. Sorry Vivek - Better luck next time. Next time please get a visa so that you can get off the ship. Vivek was in Delhi around the same time I was (78-80) but was never able to hook up. Vivek and I had the distinction of being last in class every grading period. Hey, at least we were consistent!!

Praveen Arora - Anyone heard from him? I met him when I was doing my BCOMM in Delhi (77-80). After that I completely lost touch. He used to live in RK Purun - don't remember the sector. He still used to wear his horseshoe locket.

Sharad Agrawal - Hmm.. Kitne Aadme The? Sardar Do - Sharad had the Sholay LP (remember those black circular things?) with the whole soundtrack of the movie on it. I remember going to his house and listening to it many times. But dammit - he was very Selective about making copies of the record. He wanted the exclusivity :-) Sharad - Saw your website. It looks fantabulous!! Kudos on all the awards On my next trip to India I'll see if I can fly via Dubai. I also saw your picture with the two gals - Preeti and Jyoti - Party on!!! Next time invite me too.

Suhail Raoof - Haven't kept in touch with him. Manoj told me he had visited him once in the early 80's.

Charanjit Singh - The Kishore Kumar of our class! I still remember him singing "Zindagi Ke Safar Me Guzar Jate..". I have no idea where he is. Anyone have any info? I think his father worked at the Indian Embassy.

Alka Sexana - She was always quiet and business like. She was in school to study and by god that is what she was going to do! Anything else was a waste of time. But she would always help when I asked (and I really need a LOT of help) - especially Chemistree and Physiks - hated those subjects - the only fun part was dropping sodium in the water and see it zip around and poor Mr. Khetrapal looking disapprovingly at us. I don't think he ever yelled at us. He was too nice. That reminds me - there was another Chemistry teacher before him - Mr. Srivastava(I think). Gave him a hard time too..

Preeti Nambiar - What can I say? I remember two things - the dazzling smile and the strand of hair that would always fall off the side of her face when she would bend her head forward - and how she would flick it back. Two minutes later it would be falling again and them another flick. My dear Preeti - Do you know how distracting that was?? You have no idea!! Hope you are having fun in Australia.

Mini Prasad - I remember you as the Rebel one. One person who could piss off our Hindi teacher - Mrs. Bhardwaj - was Mini. She would always argue with her and then respond in English. That would drive Mrs. B nuts. Also, you were into palmistry. Do you still do that? I remember the parties at your house. They were always fun. From the many posts, I see your brothers have not lost thier sense of humor! I met Mini, Ajay, Vijay a few times in Delhi back in the late 70's. I think you all came over to our house in Rajouri Garden once also.

Suroor Mehta - I remember the Birthday party at your house. I think that was 9th grade - 1975 - 20 years ago (I feel oooold). I think we played "In the Dark" hide and seek. Hmmm..

Some of the other people whose names come to mind (but no faces) - Nutan Goel, Chaitali Das, Manjula Goswami, Dhanmanjari Ranaday. Am I forgetting anyone?

One of the best part of the site is the pictures. Here is my first contribution. It is our class picture. Mini must have been out that day. You can download it from here:(No slideshow yet...more pics to come later)

http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2120629766&mode=invite&idx=1

Click on the picture and download from the "view original Image" icon. I will be posting more pictures as I scan them.

So here were some recollections of my classmates in Kabul. I read the posts of of other people - some I remember, some I don't. I'm sure pictues and comments will jog my memory. I will write to the rest at another time. I am running out of steam ... Didn't realize I had written so much. Sh**. If I could have written half as much when I was at ISK, I would have passed with flying colors.

I would love to hear what all of you have been up to for the last 28 years.... More on that later..

Bye for now - and to quote Ajay Prasad - Sab khoe hue phir se milenge !!!

Hello Sandeep bhaiya, Bina (Ma'm), Roshana, Shobhana, Kaveri (Subiah), Prasads (Ajay, Vijay, Mini), Shashi Balagopal, Manoj and Vibha Talwar and the entire gang: I am so overwhelmed with this website which is taking me back to 1970s. I joined ISK in 3rd std and that was in 1976. I remember all of you too very well. Sandeep bhaiya: Kaveri house was always confident of coming 1st or 2nd because of you who would always top the elocution/oratorical debates. Bina MA'M: But for you, I would not have passed geography. I must admit I am still poor in this subject. I remember winning 1st prize in a singing competition for juniors and the song I sang was "All things bright and beautiful" which was taught by uncle (your father). How is aunty doing? Roshna - how are you and the kids? Thank you for attending my wedding reception way back in 1992 and Shobhana - how can I forget you!!! You used to scare me so much while playing "dark room", ha ha ha. How are you dear? Hope you are all doing very fine. Not to forget Kaveri didhi who with Roshna gave me tremondous confidence to sing a tamil song in a competition, Ajay & Vijay bhaiyas (if I remember correct, you are twin brothers who enacted a play with a broken mirror in front of you, right???)Oh mine, I am becoming too nostalgic......let me stop here.
I do have 2 or 3 editions of our school annual magazine. Will surely scan and send some pictures.
My contact id: vijayamx@state.gov or vijaya.mahesh@gmail.com. The first id is my official id which I will access every day. I am employed with American Consulate in Chennai, heading the Human Resources section. My mobile number is: 98414-19369.
Thank you Sandeep bhaiya for introducing me to this lovely website. Good day to all....
Chao,

At least the PM is harmless. Following current affairs, I note that wherever our incumbent Foreign Minister turns up, there are bomb blasts in undergrounds, over grounds and floods and anything else that I might have missed. Best kept overseas?

Loved your PJ.

Not sure all have noticed, but there is now a flow of "Bollywood" concerts in Kabul. Glad to see they are continue to be huge fans of Hindi cinema. I still smile remembering how most taxi wallas sort of assumed we knew Dharmendra and Hema Malini personally, eh?

I came to know about these via the slightly sad news :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4703483.stm

.. but liked Sonu Nigam's very positive comment after the event.

Hallo everybody. Nobody seems to be signing into the Guest book nowadays?? I am looking forward to meeting Manoj and Vijay (Suri)in early September when I am in Washington. I met an ISKian, some of you may remember her - Vijaya (Natarajan). Her father (Mr Natarajan) was in the US Embassy. She must have been in the 3rd or 4th std in 1976-77. She was excited about the website and will log on soon. It was wonderful talking to her of the good old days in Kabul. Also spoke to Mini last week.

Dear Manoj

Congratulations on making the ISKAA alumni a reality. Now, we need to think of a reunion. Quite a few of us are Delhi or India based. I believe that there is a really good travel agent based in Arlington who could help the USA based alumni get good tickets to return to Bharat for the reunion......maybe PTA tickets for the Europe based gang as well......Travel agent, I know that you are going to read this...... please don't kill me for volunteering you.... I am my mother's only eldest child.........LOL

ISKAA is one year old today. Happy B'day ISKAA !!
Last year, it was just a dream to try and find isk-ites and bring them together. Today, we have 50 registered members and the list continues to grow. Thanks to all of you for visiting the site and getting re-acquainted with each other. There have been over 700 entries to the guestbook in just one year and probably hundreds of emails exchanged.
I would like to thank all of you in making this a success!
Let us continue to be in touch with each other.

Friendship should last a lifetime.

Cheers!

Hi there!

I am sure that when we Clouseaus do find Vivek, he will be flattered though hope he doesn't remember good old Pink Panther...... Manoj, MEA and Embassies can be a tad unco-operative at times but not to worry. Give me a day or two to try another avenue through the 'Uncle Brigade'. By the way, KRP stands for Kunwar Ram Pratap Singh.

Kavita, how goes? Can you email me Kalyani's new number?

Kavita, I tried that too but did'nt get too far. The MEA in India wasn't helpfull and unless someone knows where in Indore he lives it will hard to track him down. (Does anyone know his real name KRP)?
Fact: In the end though, Clousseau always got his man!!

Vatsala - I had heard Vivek was in Vienna, Austria a while back and during a stop-over in Vienna I picked up the local phone book to look him up...the funny thing is that the situtaion was similar to my recent findings in Australia. I think these were the guys that were confused by the similar names and accidently ended up in Austria instead of Australia...OK, ok...I know that's a cheap shot on the singh's but this might clear up the confusion for them...another cheap shot...OK STOP IT !!

Manoj,

Had a good laugh on reading your message... so true.....okay, here is some more stuff that I recall from vague conversations dating back to 1996. Met one of his alumni from Scindia School, Gwalior while living in Tunisia. Our missing V Singh excelled in athletics (as was to be expected) and went on to do hotel management from Austria. Will try to find out more. Does this help? Did try a search for hotels in Australia but did not come up with anything tangible.

Cheers

Vatsala/Kavita...
what I found out is that looking for somebody with the name "Singh" in Australia is looking for a "Chin" in China or a "Smith" in USA. Way too many of them. LOL
I did a search on australian white pages and there's a million V. Singhs. Is there something going on Down Under that I don't know about? Prithi, please shed some light on this...

Hi All
Hey Kavita this sounds like some kind of 5 year plan. Yes its tough getting out of work schedules and November will be a good time to visit - climatically. Right now its simply the PITS! However, the invite still holds and we look forward to your next attempt. How is Kalyani? You were to send me her e-mail ID ... if she has finally got one. Kya Hua?
I finally went to meet the Dear Boy Jyoti Narula who is manufacturing the SATYA PAUL collection. His factory looks like a Pavilion at the Pragati Maidan .... all rearing to exhibit its finest collection. They've done a brilliant job with whites and glasswork. Jyoti has gotten rid of his baby-plump-ness and is looking fighting fit, greying slightly on the temples and his wittiness is ABSOLUTELY INTACT. Busy man yet retains a great sense of humour. Imagine this guy who dressed up like a Punjabi Mom singing "Jee Ka Janjaal Mora Bajra Layo ..." Got an update on his family, Deepak, Poonam et al. Great meeting these guys after so long.
Can't see much of Sandeep Shastri here. Hey are you still there?
August is approaching and I am waiting for Poonam Sahni to plan her visit around then. What's plans? Who all have more scoops for this site? Do log-in fast...life is short, every day a page from life is read...we're a few lucky ones who have actually started reviving our past. Keep it going.
Love All

Sorry about logging in so late but was caught up with a lot of work, travelling and vacations too as the kids were off and a Goa plan all screwed up. well its good to know that you have finally decided to land up. Yes we'll wait for you around the 15th and ijay will also be in town with his family. We'll try and squeeze him in too. Just tell me where you are in Jammu as well as in Delhi, once you reach. Mail me at my e-mail address please.
Hey Jaishanker
Vijay is on his way to Hyderabad with his family, perhaps on the 7th upto 9th. He is staying with his Friend Manoj Chansoriya who is Air Traffic Controller at the Airport. His mobile no is 09829044405. Give him the jolt ... 'cause i haven't told him about informing you of his arrival.
Met Jyoti Narula. Will tell about it later.

I have been meaning to write for a while, but have been quite busy ever since I got back from India. Alka, hi! It's been so long. Where are you? Kaveryh, I tried to call you in Delhi but couldn't get through. Has your number changed? I got it off your message on this site--it was from last year, I think. Can you send it to me again? It was great seeing Jaishankar and his wife, Priya. We spent an evening together, reliving some of the fun times in ISK.

Soumitra, I think it's a great idea to make a film about Afghanistan. I'll see what I can find out about the UN presence there. Might be of help. If you're interested in doing some reading about it, there have been a few good books out over the last few years, and I can give you the titles.

I did look at some old pics from the school, but since they were stuck hard to the album, I'll have to wait until I can get them scanned before posting them. Jaishankar, something for us to do next time I'm in Hyd.? Alka, there's one of us with Chaitali Das, Nutan Goel and Manjula Goswami in saris!! We must have been 11 or 12--look like such kids.

The Indian Embassy details in Kabul are available on the MEA website www.meaindia.nic.in which will give you the address, telephone, fax and email address. Unfortunately, they have not given details of the Ambassador etc which you could get if you contact the MEA directly, at perhaps the WANA division.

Dear All,

Hi!

In my earlier post I had mentioned that I am a filmmaker working in Bombay. It has been my dream for so many years to make a documentary on Afghanistan.

It was not possible then. All doors had been closed. A huge mass of humanity was trapped inside a landscape that was completely inaccessible except for CNN and BBC - and their coverage rarely went beyond their editorial briefs.

What has disturbed me (and I am sure all of us who have lived there) during the last few years are the images that have come out the country. Images that are splashed all across the news channels, newspapers and magazines. Images of gun wielding mullahs! Images of little children playing with AK47s, of battered villages and of injured bodies. Images of extreme poverty on one hand and religious extremism on the other. In these images we have tried to find people we knew. Where have they all gone?

This year it will be 26 years from the time when the Soviet Red Army entered Afghanistan. These milestones seem absurd when one views them against a backdrop of immeasurable human suffering. But they are important points in the history of mankind for us to pause and to think where we went wrong. How we, as a world community, allowed a country with such an extraordinary past to be destroyed to dust. Is there a nation in the world whose population was reduced by 10 percent via mortality and 30 percent through migration and yet faced so much indifference from the world?

We could only sit and watch it happen on our television screens!
The proposed film will attempt to try and find that country, which I genuinely believe, still exists - the one that we all left behind. The attempt is also to get through to the viewer that even if a nation or its people have no commodities or merchandise to offer, they still have a right to lead a life with dignity.

I am very happy to inform you that Surinder Popli (also from ISK, 1975-79) and I have contributed and raised a shoestring budget of four lakhs to finally make this dream into reality.
I am planning to shoot this film sometime in July-August for which we will be traveling to Afghanistan for a period of approximately 20 days. During our visit, we will travel to Kabul, Bamiyan, Kandahar, Mazare Shariff, Gazni, Herat and Jalalabad.

We would be very grateful if you could help us in this endeavor in whichever way you can.

Firstly, as always, is the financial aspect. Any contributions are welcome. We have 4 lakhs but still need 6 more. All contributors will be part producers and will get the appropriate share once the film is complete and is sold to various TV channels across the world.

Secondly, we need contacts of people in Afghanistan. People from all walks of life – ordinary people – people who matter. Can you put me through to people you know, your family or friends? People with whom I can interact while I am there? And also people in the Indian Embassy who are currently there.

Thirdly, any audio visual record in the form of photographs or films (there was no video then but some of us had super8 cameras). We ourselves had a super8 and have a number of films on the Jashan ceremony of Noor Mohammad Taraki, Bushkashi etc. All these kind of images would be very helpful.

I hope I am not intruding into your busy schedules, but I am sure you will understand how even a little assistance will go a long way in making this film possible.

A bit about myself: I have been making films for the last 14 years since I passed out from the Film & TV Inst. of India, Pune. I have directed feature films, documentaries and also produced animation films for Channel 4. (Some of my more popular work is featured on the google search) My films have been screened at various film festivals like Cannes, Berlin, London, Bombay, Hiroshima, Annecy, Oberhausen and numerous other festivals around the world.

Just trying to add gravity to the proposal!!

I eagerly wait for your response. You may contact me on my email address and I will be very happy to answer any queries that you may have.

Love to all,
Soumitra Ranade

Hi Everyone!

SORRY, have been out of circulation for long. Missed Deepak in Delhi again, although we had a good chat on the Phone the day he landed. My apologies to Deepak. Had to be in & out of Town too often within that time and preparing for five presentations was terrible. Caught the viral at the end of it. Well i'm back. Just found some of the new entrants on the site ... Hi Sharad and Hi Vivek. Good to see you in that picture with Preeti & Poonam. Poonam has become sooooo thin. I still remember the Poonam in TCS ... But you're looking very good. Kavita is going to be in very soon. Welcome Kavita. Just send me a mail about your final plan in Delhi. We'll surely work something out.

S'long everyone !!

I am going to be in Delhi from March 23 through 30. I was hoping that during that time we can organize an evening when ISKites in the area or visiting could get together. Jyoti is out of town for the next two weeks. I'll ask him to get in touch with you when he gets back. It would be great if we can do an old times revisited evening. Hope to catch up with you and all others in the Delhi area soon.

Prithi- did you guys happen to take any pictures while you were in Dubai? If it's something you can share with rest of the gang, email me.

Don't know what happened to Shastri...he mailed me from Pittsburgh, asking for my phone number over two weeks ago, have not heard from him since. He was travelling to California before returning to DC.

I was with Sandeep Bhasin over the weekend in New Jersey. Anyone remember him and his brothers - Sanjive and Rajive? Well, Sandeep is going through a rough period...he is currently going through chemo-therapy and has lost all his hair. He seems to be responding well to the medication and other than the nasty effects of chemo, he seems to be fine. Our prayers are with him and he will be fine in a couple of months.

I will be in Portland, OR during first week of May. I will travelling to Seattle and Vancouver the following week. Anyone out that way?

Kavita- your plans for DC?

Manoj has set off such a wonderful chain reaction with so many people getting in touch with each other again.I dropped in on Mini just two weeks ago while in Delhi for a couple of days and we had a great time catching up.Tried to call Kavery after I got her number from Mini but couldnt get through. Then had a happy reunion with Poonam (Narula) in Dubai on my way back to Sydney (which the two of us carefully planned together over the past few months once we rediscovered each other through Manoj). It was just so wonderful to find each other again! And then we met up with Sharad for dinner while in Dubai.I can see he has found the website too. Its true that meeting friends is like regaining a part of oneself.

Hey Guys !! I'm back !!!
Wishing you all a wonderful 2005. May all who've lost their loved meet up with them safe and sound. May all our prayers be heard loud and clear.
Yes the Tsunami was a catastrophe not many even knew about technically. But we sure don't like introductions of this sort.
It was great to hear from Bina that everyone is safe.
It was a hell of a New Year for me here. I managed to catch up with Anshuman and Sandeep Talwar. Though Anshu and I could manage a lengthy conversation Sandeep, Mini, Tariq, Bharti and I managed to get together at the Aka Saka at Defence colony. Tried to gather as many people as I could but many couldn't make it as the time was too short, I had arrived back from Nainital just two days earlier and by the time I could contact people it was rather tight. But we had a very nice time. Sandeep had taken pictures of us as both Mini and I forgot our cameras at home. And guess what (Suroor and Preeti, you'll relate to this) .... this time I forgot my purse at home. But thanks to Credit Cards and Mini's purse we didn't have to face any emarassment. (This was perhaps the only day in my life such a thing has happened.)
Haven't been able to do much on the ISKAA contact front as i've been down with work, touring and presentations for the past three weeks.
Love to all
... and "Insha Allah" Sab khoe hue phir se milenge !!!

Happy New Year to everyone of you and your Families.
I have been a bit busy with Peak Season Traffic, Udaipur having daily four flights and Winter effecting our schedules with Fog delays, cancellations, etc. Just went through all messages to update myself. Well, Delhi guys met on Sunday afternoon, Hope you all had a good time together. Sorry couldn't make it as Ajay's invitation came the same morning. Any how, you guys carry on with it and other's will join for sure next time.
Just when celebrations were on for Christmas & New Year, Tsunami waves had struck on 26th December morning. You all are well aware of the disaster that has taken place and the massive loss of life. As for the Sub-Continent Andaman & Nocobar Islands and several villages along India's SouthEastern coast in Tamil Nadu & Kerala are badly affected.
7000 Employees of Jet Airways have contributed One Days Salary to the disaster relief efforts. The Company has also contributed seperately to the rehabilitation and emergency aid by all appropriate means. We are operating additional flights from Port Blair to Chennai and Kolkata to carry visitors stranded in Port Blair, in addition to carrying releif supplies on our flights. Hope this New Year brings Peace & Prosperity to all.
Manoj....Thanks for posting the pictures. That was quick work. I was very keen to meet Sandeep but unfortunately couldn't make it. At least I will speak with him while he is around in Delhi. What are your plans? Many of our friends are due to visit. Looking forward to meeting them all.
Anshu, Deepak, Kavita....please give me sufficient notice so I can come down to Delhi....unless you all plan your visit to Udaipur. Look forward to it.

The tsunami tragedy has struck close.
I am sorry to report this - Deepa Deshpande's ('72-'74, class 8th,9th) husband Dr. Rajeshwar Khanade is still missing. He was part of a team with naturalist Dr. Pramod Nargolkar near Campbell bay at "point 41" a tortoise nesting ground.
The family in Pune urges all to pray for his safe return.
Girish Deshpande is in Andaman looking for his brother-in-law. I would be happy to pass on any tips/contacts any of you may have regarding that area.

A survivor(reported missing earlier)in my wife's department, Department of Post,Govt. of India posted at Car Nicobar Island has an astonishing tale to tell.He along with three other persons was living in a building near the sea.On the fateful morning, they were getting ready when they felt the earth move violently. They came out of the building and saw it sway at more than 60 degrees before it collapsed in front of their eyes. The sea appeared to be ominously quiet. They looked at the sea-and found there was no sea! The sea had gone back more than a km. and they could see the waterless sea bed!Sensing something was greatly wrong, they started running towards higher groud some distance away. They found the earth cracking behind them as they ran and the earth was spewing some soft black slimy thing all around them which made the running difficult. When they looked back they saw a thirty feet high wall of water rushing towards them.As they touched the higher ground, the wall of water broke and barely missed them by about five metres.Scary,to say the least-or Apocalyptic?

The New Year is set before us like an unwritten volume-all its pages blank.Let us write upon each day's page things that at the end of the year we will look upon with rejoicing rather than regret. The first task, alas,is foretold. We must do,in our own way, whatever we can,to allay the suffering of tsunami survivers. We,in Government, are donating our one day's salary to the P.M. A Happy New Year to all

This is to wish everyone a very, very good New Year. I hope that all of you in the areas hit by the tsunamis, or with families in these areas, are going to be okay and will have the strength to recover.

The suddeness and the force of the waves and the extent of the destruction and loss of life has been unbelievable. One of my friends had gone to Phuket with his wife and two young children. Completely by chance, they decided to go to the hills--or at least to higher ground--on the 26th, and saw the whole thing happen. You're right, Kavita, it does bring home how vulnerable life is, and how fragile. It came almost exactly a year after the Bam earthquake in Iran.

About contributions, Manoj has a pretty comprehensive list on this website. I'll post some others when I get back to my office on the 4th. In Switzerland, the UN, as well as several NGOs and charities have set up accounts for the tsunami victims. The UN is also calling for donations of medical supplies, non-perishable food, clothes, shoes, blankets, toilet items... What is amazing about all this is how people always find the strength not only to deal with this, but are also able to help others.

Take care,
